Seminars - Personal Safety

This particular seminar has proven extremely popular with our corporate clients who want to provide their employees with the training necessary to not only "feel" safer immediately, but actually be safer, from the time they walk out of the brief seminar session, regardless of whether they choose to pursue on-going training in defensive skills. The diverse background of John Villines as a personal safety trainer, bodyguard, and physical security specialist provides a very practical blend of information and tactics essential to enhancing personal safety.

The key to preventing personal victimization is information. Individuals must gain a better understanding of how criminals commit crimes and how each of us can take control of making it much, much more difficult for them to be successful. For example, most personal assaults occur when a criminal can successfully accomplish one of the following two tactics: catch the person by surprise; or deceive the person with some sort of ruse. How many times have we heard the victim of a crime exclaim, "they came from nowhere"; the criminal using the surprise tactic depends upon such "nowhere places". Attendees quickly learn how to identify and avoid such situations. Time and time again we’ve heard others say, "I thought there was something suspicious about that person," referring after-the-fact to their attacker. But maybe the attacker initially appeared to need help, or maybe they were well dressed, or they had a small child with them, etc. The criminal depending upon deceit relies upon their ability to momentarily draw-in their victim through any number of effective ruses. Identifying many of the most common ones, specific training is provided regarding how to respond. Of course, the information is always presented with a sensitivity to the possibility that someone in the group, or a friend or family member of someone in the group, has been the victim of a personal crime. In many cases, that crime will have been a sexual assault. For that reason the information is always presented in a manner that respects the fact that no victim of sexual assault should ever be made to feel that being the victim of the crime was their fault.. The seminar is about target hardening, informing the individual about how they can greatly reduce the probability of becoming a victim of crime on the street, in their workplace, in their vehicle and at home.

Attendees often pose specific questions about alarms, weapons, martial arts, and other aspects of personal safety. These are addressed in the body of the seminar, and detailed information is provided to help attendees develop criteria for deciding what is best for them. This introductory level seminar provides an excellent opportunity for their exposure to a wide variety of options and to learn the strengths and weaknesses of each. With such an approach, the sponsoring corporation assumes the appropriately responsible position of providing the initial training that will result in safer employees, but does not become responsible for providing the on-going personal training of each employee. Usually, only a very small percentage of the attendees will opt for pursuing a lengthy program in personal physical defensive tactics, such as martial arts, and anything less than a structured, long-term commitment to such training is counter-productive. If there is sufficient interest among attendees and the sponsoring corporation opts for follow-up training, appropriate additional training can be developed.
